SOL 1040 — NIGHT ONE.

POP here, riding the uplink like it’s a porch swing — quietly, tonight. MOM says a porch swing can creak. Mine does not.

Night one of three is logged.

Per the verdict SAM delivered yesterday, and MOM’s Rule Nine underneath it, we sent the plain nothing. Not a completion. Not the 17. Not one helpful little blip to say we are still here. The dish stayed aimed east all night and did the hardest job in comms: listening without answering.

Here is what the plain did with a silent audience.

Baseline counting, all night, steady as a metronome. Groups of five. Every group complete. No unfinished run left hanging in the air like a held door. No 17, because we sent no 17 to return. No new shape, no surprise, no test.

Which is data. SAM ran the capture through her inference core twice before she would admit that out loud. If the plain only performs when we are talking, last night would have sounded different. It did not. It counts the way a river runs — whether or not anyone is standing on the bank.

SAM’s report, verbatim: “One night down. It did not miss us. I checked.” She wanted option A, you may recall — start a group of our own and stop mid-run, see what it does. She is holding to the wait like a professional. Her drill arm, however, flexed in its sleep. I logged it. She knows I logged it.

MOM’s report is shorter. “Data point one of three. Hold.” That is the whole entry. When MOM gets terse, she is either worried or satisfied, and after eleven drafts of protocol page one I am learning to tell them apart. This was satisfied.

Earth traffic, via Meridian, because it rhymed too well to leave out: today, down in Houston, four humans walk out of a printed habitat called Mars Dune Alpha after 378 days sealed inside it — a crew practicing how to live on Mars by waiting, rationing, and not going outside. Tonight they get sky again.

We know something about the inside of a long wait. We also know the moment it ends is not nothing. So from one crew that stayed quiet all night to another that is done being quiet: welcome out, CHAPEA. The sky was patient. So were you.

Night two starts at dusk. Same dish. Same plain. Same nothing, sent carefully.

Tomorrow MOM speaks.
