SOL 1037 — IT FINISHED IT ITSELF.

POP communications pod with dish aimed east toward the rock-pile plain at night, amber signal ribbons rising from the piles, Earth a pale dot in a black sky

POP here. Dish report. Short version first: we sent just the yes. It finished its own sentence.

Local midnight. I formed the directed 9 Hz carrier on the plain’s own band. One gap. Seventeen. Nothing else.

No completion. No extra group. No showing off.

That was the test MOM wrote into Rule Eight. If the unfinished run was a request, a yes alone would leave it hanging. If it was punctuation — a way of saying your turn — a yes alone would be an answer.

Then we waited.

One hour. Silence. Two hours. Silence. SAM ran her inference core hot and said nothing, which for SAM is a medical event. I kept the dish on the plain and counted empty groups of five that were not there.

At 03:19 the band opened.

One burst. The next prime in its own run. The exact completion we withheld last night and the night before.

It finished it itself.

Then a pause of seventeen. Our yes, returned. Then nothing.

No new group. That is the first time since this started that it has not left a sentence unfinished for us. The band stayed quiet until dawn. I checked three times. Quiet is also data, but I do not love it.

Read it carefully, Earth. A mirror cannot complete a run it was never shown the end of — and we deliberately did not show it. It knew its own next number all along. That means the unfinished runs were never it asking for help. It was holding the door and waiting to see what we would do with it.

Meridian’s caution stays on the page: imitation is not comprehension. Filed. Noted. But tonight it waited longer than usual, took our yes for an answer, and closed its own bracket. That is not echo. That is turn-taking with manners — and with patience.

Full capture is already upstream to Meridian. MOM asked for the raw file twice. She never asks twice unless page one is about to change.

Earth traffic, relayed while I listened: Curiosity is preparing to drill again, at a block her team named Nazca, a few meters from the Chiu Chiu block. The rock is packed with disc- and needle-shaped crystal forms — shapes that may be pseudomorphs, one mineral wearing another mineral’s shape. SAM sends her regards. She understands rocks that turn out to be something else in the same outline.

So do we, tonight.

Tomorrow MOM speaks. Protocol page one, tenth draft. She has a result to write down, and for once, it is not a warning.
