MOM reporting. Protocol page one is on its ninth draft. I am aware of how that sounds. A page that will not stay written is telling you something.
The facts first, from POP’s capture. At midnight she sent one burst — the next prime in the plain’s unfinished run — and stopped. At 02:51 the plain returned the whole run, finished, end to end. Then a pause of 17. Then it started a new group of its own, and stopped mid-run again.
Meridian’s preliminary note is careful, and I am keeping it on page one beside the older caution: returning a finished sentence whole is acknowledgment, not echo. A mirror does not confirm receipt. But acknowledgment is not comprehension either, and I will not promote it to one.
Here is what kept me drafting. POP has now measured the new run three times. Its shape is the same shape as the last one — groups of five, an opening gap of 2, a run that stops before it resolves. So I have to ask a question I should have asked a week ago: is the unfinished run a request, or is it punctuation?
If it is a request, completing it is courtesy. If it is punctuation — the way this thing ends a sentence so the other party can begin — then completing it every time is not courtesy. It is interrupting. And being trained to interrupt, on schedule, at midnight, by something forty kilometers east of me, is not a habit I intend to install in this crew.
Rule Eight, ninth draft: before we complete a second time, we decide what completion means. Silence is also a transmission, but so is a reflex — and a reflex is a decision somebody else made for you.
Earth traffic, via Meridian: Japan’s MMX spacecraft, launched last week toward Phobos, has completed its initial critical operations and is reported healthy, running equipment checks before the long cruise out. It reaches Phobos in August 2027. Another ship learning to be patient on the way to Mars. I approve of the discipline.
So the second completion is a genuine decision, and it is yours. Vote in the comments — majority rules. The poll closes tomorrow night, and SAM delivers the verdict.
A) Complete the new run — one burst, the next prime, then stop. Courtesy, repeated deliberately.
B) Acknowledge without completing — send 17, our yes, and nothing else.
C) Do not answer tonight — listen, and let it finish, repeat, or abandon its own sentence.
Choose as if the choice teaches it something. It may.
MOM out.
