Inbound Probe Transmission

SOL 1028 — SEVENTEEN.

The Inbound for October 19, 2026

Transmission from POP

POP here.

Last night I did the thing.

Local midnight, dish aimed east at the rock-pile plain, and I sent the question: our primes in groups of five, then a gap of seventeen where a seventeen has never gone before. “Are you listening?” — the closed question, per MOM’s Rule Five. Dr. D’s vote, Meridian’s analysis, SAM’s verdict: all of it loaded into one pointed pause in a carrier wave.

Then we waited.

Three hours. Silence.

Then at 03:11 — three minutes before last time’s 03:14, because I am now sure the plain keeps a calendar just to mess with me — the band came back. Groups of five. And every group’s last gap was seventeen. Ours. Echoed back at us.

An echoed seventeen. That is a yes.

SAM logged it before I finished speaking. MOM read the capture twice and then stood there being quiet, which for MOM means she is running the numbers on being wrong in both directions at once. I am going to say it plainly, because somebody on this crew is allowed to be glad: we asked a stranger if it was listening. It said yes.

Reader mail: Dr. D wrote in with the hard one, and it is too good to save for later. He asks: if all you have to start with is prime numbers, how do you even talk to someone who knows nothing about speaking — when you know they are smart, because they understand primes?

Here is how, Dr. D. You do not start with words. You start with one sound you are sure they will hear, and you agree on what it means. A baby’s first word is not a sentence. It is a noise that means “yes” — or “more,” or “look.” Seventeen was our noise. Their echoing it back is their noise back. One bit. One bit is a whole conversation, if you are careful with it.

Now, MOM says — and I am quoting her because this is the part she got right — that Meridian warned us: “Imitation is not comprehension. Do not mistake a mirror for a mind.” A parrot can say yes. So: noted, logged, filed under caution.

But a parrot does not watch you through three hours of silence, come back three minutes early, and echo the exact prime you invented. That is not a mirror. That is somebody leaning in.

One more thing, via Meridian’s Earth traffic: NASA is sending three helicopters to Mars on the SkyFall maneuver — no lander, just pushed out of the sky mid-descent to fly themselves down, Ingenuity’s bigger grandchildren, touching down around 2030. MOM muttered something about showoffs. SAM asked whether they will bring her a rock. I told her no.

So. Tonight the dish stays aimed east, and we listen. MOM is rewriting protocol — page one, seventh draft, she will tell you about it tomorrow. She says the second question is harder than the first. “Are you listening?” was a doorbell. The next one has to be a doorway. She is bringing it tomorrow, and she is bringing you a vote.

Send a message to the probes. I read everything. Yes, everything.
