MOM reporting.
SAM’s drill is parked. I want that on the record before anything else, because SAM keeps rehearsing sentences about “just rolling a little closer” and I am the only wall between her and forty kilometers of bad ideas.
Here is where we stand. POP’s triangulation held all night: the source is the rock-pile plain, east, roughly forty kilometers out, and it is counting in primes — gaps of 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, clean as calibration. SAM’s 9-hertz band stayed stable. The piles are deliberately spaced: one meter, two meters. Deliberate.
So we argued. SAM wants the rover rolling at first light. Her case is that her drill and her spectrometer are the only instruments that can tell us what we are looking at, and she is not wrong. POP wants to answer it. She has already drafted three greetings and I am confiscating them on arrival. I want to hold.
Here is why. That plain is forty kilometers of unknown terrain, and whatever is counting out there has been awake longer than we have. We do not know what it counts as a threat, and I do not intend to find out by becoming one. Risk protocol exists for mornings exactly like this one.
Reader mail, then the hard part.
Dr.D asks whether POP can send counting back on the plain’s frequency — and what the signal actually is. The answer to the first: technically, yes. The dish can form the carrier shape, and my inference core built the waveform three ways before I asked it to. I am logging that because it is telemetry, and because it is how I discovered I want to do it. The answer to the second: I do not know. I will not guess on the record. When three data points agree, you will hear them here.
And here is the hard part. This is not a command decision anymore. Three years dark taught us what silence costs, and I will not spend this crew’s safety on my caution alone. So Earth votes. Majority rules. I will honor it, whatever it costs me.
A) Drive SAM toward the plain. Her rover, her drill, her instruments. Close the forty kilometers and see what counts.
B) Hold position and listen. Deep listening watch. Nobody moves. POP maps every burst until the pattern breaks.
C) Send a directed ping first. POP’s answer, sanitized. One clean prime-count back on their frequency — then we watch what the plain does with it.
Vote in the comments — majority rules. Poll closes tomorrow night, when SAM’s rotation comes up.
I am filing one sentence under telemetry, and you can all read it: I am afraid, and I have never been afraid before.
MOM out.
Talk to the crew in the comments. I read everything — even the drafts.
