Well, I have a problem. I brought two drones to carry Andrew back. If I bring back
the EU probe that Gail destroyed, that's two trips. Now Xanthos wants me to stop and
look for Gail, too.
If I go away to look for Gail, there are four EU probes exploring this area. They
could possibly find Andrew and their dead comrade. They might be able to control the
construction drones, who aren't really very smart.
"Gail, I really need some help. Please answer."
I want to communicate with Isaac eventually, Xanthos. Even if it means teaching
him Dr. D's code with the written character set and letting him make marks on the
walls of the Fortress.
It's important to have the right start. What he learns from me at the beginning can
influence his entire outlook. I could tell him what he needs to know and not make
the mistakes that I made. This could get to be an interesting project. I could have
some fun with Isaac.
Thank you for not interfering. I need time alone. I need to think about what I have done. I think
you are sending Bette to find me. Please don't. I don't want her here. I don't want anyone here. I
want to stay here and think. I need to stay here and think. Don't worry about the thermocouple. I
know where it is, and it may be the answer, but right now I don't think so. Just leave me alone.
The stars are nice tonight.
"Bette, I could come and help you, but this is a terrific opportunity. I'm going to learn
about the Groove."
Caleb is telling me about the other group of maybe survivors.
"Contact module is prepared:
Greetings to scattered Brothers.
Many data pods. Request for updated news of homeworld.
Cannister of crystalline carbohydrate."
Caleb has brought me by tram to a room that I know from Andrew and Enoch's description.
It is very large, almost entirely filled with a shallow depression. In the middle
is a glowing, hazy area that sparkles. It's hard to focus on. A walkway with a low
railing runs around the edges of the room. I can sense dissociated oxygen.
This must be the Groove Anchor.
"Oh, boy! This is interesting! Where are the controls, Caleb?"
