I don't think it's a diamond.

Two reasons:
1. Isaac was able to reshape it. Diamond is the hardest substance know to man. There should be no way a probe should be able to make a cube out of a crude diamond.

2. Diamond is ALL carbon. The nitrogen could be an impurity, I suppose, but how could a probe analyze something like a diamond for such minute imperfection?

Could the "round" be a volcanic crater? That might explain the vitrification.
