Could it be that the Ipsos, using some type of geo-thermal heat, are utilizing the CO2-rich Martian atmosphere to raise some highly-efficient variety of plant life to provide the source for both their necessary oxygen and their beloved crystalline carbohydrate? If so, they must have a fairly large water source somewhere. If there's water, human life can be supported in much the same manner.
