The Probes had two type of memory Tape and RAM. The tape holds the long term memory and it is loaded and unloaded into RAM as needed. The probes don't have Hard drives like personal computers, the tape does that part. When the tape is moving if there is a leak in the shelding it could act like it is erasing the tape. When the data is moved into memory it is check but the errors will create problems.

The RAM has two types normal static RAM and Flash E-proms. the Flash memory is used as a boot strap loader. UV light will erase it. It can be rewriten from a port on the inside of the probes. And the probes have the ability to reload that code in another probe. The static RAM should be ok. (I think)..

So what we need to do if there is a chance to fix Andrew is,
1. remove the Atomic power source. ( He should be able to run off his solar panels. )
2. Erase all the tapes and reformat them.
3. Have a probe load the boot strap program into him.
4. Then load the main programs ( control, and logic) programs back into the the tapes thru the data port.
5. Them we should be able to get the radio to take the rest of the programs. ( the radio transfers are a lot faster than the ports are.)

The AI logic I hope will be in the programs transfered from the radio data.

This also assumes that removing the thermocouple will fix the only problem he has.

The Andrew as we know him will be gone unless the other probes hold the key of what it takes to make a blank newly formated probe into the probe we all know as Andrew.
