madan-hahalv:

Your question got me to thinking, "Where did I read that?" I didn’t think I had made it up, that’s not like me, especially on technical issues. BUT, I started to think I’d have to re-read all 2,174 messages on the Probe Discussion board to find the answer, a most daunting challenge. I tried searching on "Jose" and found 117 matches (not quite as bad) and skimmed awhile and found these posts:

After she completes the boot (if she does) I am not sure what we will have .. the old Bette or a New out of the box probe unit Beta. We should have Andrew check to see when and if she boots up, what is the state of her software, if she has the new AI code that was install by Jose and how much of the information is there from the mars landing ..

Time to play some what if ....

What If : the message is from an ET ...

The Reasoning: Daniel has never been changed that I can be "sure" of. He was not talking when Jose modified the AI code that the probes run. It is possible that he is "JUST" a probe. And so this "HELP ME" message is from the ET's.

Dr.D

PS: I don't think that is the case but we need to cover all the possibilities.

These posts apparently lay dormant in my sub-conscious until my post on July 26:

There may have been additional nuggets of information that I haven’t as yet found (I’m fairly certain there are) but maybe Dr.D could fill in the blanks on the AI front for us and save me all of that spelunking! *GRIN*

I guess no one ever considered the facts on *WHY* the probes were sentient. We just accepted it as a *Truth* and moved on. Now that there are other probes in a crashed landing vehicle to deal with, the issue of sentience comes to the forefront. If they ARE *JUST* probes, can "OUR" probes give the new arrivals sentience by uploading to them the changes Jose made to their AI software? Is this even a good idea? Should we just use them as spare parts to repair Gail and or Daniel as needed? I believe these are valid issues in need of some urgent discussion. Where’s Dr. Frankenstein when you need him?

Around the time of my July 26th post I was re-evaluating my involvement here at MarsDawn and came to the conclusion that "Lurking" was not enough… "The Probes Need You!" meant ME as well as YOU. Since then I have posted some of my thoughts about what direction should be taken in our dealings with the probes but my views have not generated much discussion. If my input is not relevant, should I go back to "Lurking"?. I don’t mean this to sound like "Whining" but perhaps we aren’t getting as much assistance from other Netizens as we’d like because this project seems like some kind of "Good ‘ol Boy’s Club" and people fear their ideas will be ignored. Even an "I disagree" post like I got from Taz is preferable to being ignored. (That DOES sound like whining, but I really don’t mean it that way. I just don’t know how else to put it! Sometimes words a way have I not!) I have read the posts here and at the Messhall as well as the Probe Transmissions virtually every day since the beginning and will continue to do so. Even though I’ve only recently begun posting I feel that I have a vested interest in the probes well-being and will continue to post my suggestions. Take ‘em or leave ‘em… I’m here for the duration.

Stubborn but friendly,

Uncle Bob
