Compared to the size of the crater, it's a very narrow column. I'm not sure that "blaze of glory" or "in a puff of smoke" are entirely out of the question.

I am not sure of the scale of the picture, so I'm not sure how big the crater or the smoke column are. My initial impression, judging from the smaller, better defined craters at the upper left is that it's fairly large. I'm not sure that a probe would produce that much smoke if that is the case.

But what gives me the impression that it may be Gail is that it's where Andrew started his search, based on Gail's last known position.

Regardless of the smoke, whatever happened to Gail, it happened suddenly, because she didn't say anything to the other probes or activate her distress beacon.
