I already had a bookmark to the Mars Pathfinder homepage, which includes a fact sheet on Mars. Finding out what was going on in the sky in 1245 will be a bit more challenging.

If the Groove is some sort of tunnel through space-time, the ETs would have known about the Amphibian attack long before any celestial event would have been visible on Earth, so the search should include a number of years after that. When was that famous supernova that the Chinese recorded? That's the only event that springs to mind, and a supernova is the only thing that we would be able to observe.
