You are correct. We shouldn't assume that the purple planet is the ETs homeworld. It could simply be another place they've visited. However, a crater can cast shadows outside of itself depending on how it was made. If the impact deformed the surface such that the edge of the crater is higher than the surrounding surface, then the edge on one side would cast a shadow outside and the opposite edge would cast a shadow inside. Unfortunately, the computer on my desk has a poor color map so I miss much detail in these pictures unless I make a point to use someone's Mac afterhours. But you are of course correct that we should be careful about our assumptions of the 3D interpretation of a 2D picture.joule
