Before we can decide whether or not it can be "set free" we first have to be able to evaluate its programming.

If it does not contain an AI program then it is little more than a drone and can be safely used by the Probes as a new tool.

If it does have an AI, then they need to be able to seperate it from its controllers before they can talk to it and give it a chance to choose for itself.

If it does have the AI and it chooses to return to its masters, I think the Probes are then obligated to put back the original control codes (although modifying the program to remove hostility to themselves may not be out of the question).
