I seem to recall that Mars has a fairly dense atmosphere (?denser than Earth?). Parachutes would be a low-cost, low-weight, low-tech way of getting the lander close to the surface, with small retro-rockets firing at the last second to cushion the landing.

And as Taz said, the lander is broadcasting its claim. What a show of international cooperation, eh? "I claim this stinking planet in the name of Emperor Akahito and the stockholders of X, Inc." We may have to 'silence' the transmitter before it really grates on the probes' nerves. How long before a miner drone can get there to plant a charge?

[Note: This last bit was thrown in just to send JN Naught One into a money-grubbing tizzy, ie, "Violence! What a chapter THAT would make!" Think it worked?]
