Can someone who knows a little about Mars answer a couple questions for me? What sort of atmosphere does Mars have? Would it be sufficient to support the use of parachutes for landing. I noticed that in Gail's image that the MN lander was using chutes instead of rockets for landing.

Also, what is the atmospheric temperature? At temperatures too high, nylon and some other chute materials deteriorate and weaken. At temperatures too low they can become stiff and brittle, rendering them ineffective.

Could the light that Gail saw at the end of the MN landing have been a crash and explosion?
