Regardless of when they were launched, the ability to reprogram them is likely available. Had our probes not changed their command codes, P&H would probably have reprogrammed them all by now.

There may be a small window of opportunity when they first emerge. Andrew may be able to get to them before P&H can, but I doubt it. If I were GB, I would have P&H transmitting the change command code and reprogram commands starting the moment the lander is scheduled to begin orbiting Mars and stop only after confirmation of receipt and execution has been transmitted.

I had not thought about the window before now. It makes the odds of success a little better (like 500,000:1 instead of 1,000,000:1). Maybe it can work, but we had better have one hell of a backup plan in case it does not.

Another thought. If the MN probes intend to destroy our communications platform, then they must have one of their own. Can we usurp it?
