Okay, let's turn the analogy around

The Marshall catches up with the bad guy. A single shot rings out from his trusty six-shooter and the Marshall knows he has stumbled into the bad guy's hideout and is out gunned. He
decides to make a peaceful gesture by presenting his gun. He places it on the ground and backs away a little bit. He sees the bad guy is aware
of the gun but is not approaching, so he backs aways some more. Now the bad guy sends a henchman or two to pickup the gun while he
approaches the Marshall, all the while pointing his gun at the Marshall.

Should the Marshall continue to back away? No. His offering, the gun, has been accepted. He is now permitted to stand his ground and await
the approach of the bad guy. If the bad guy does not want to be too close to the Marshall he will communicate an order for the Marshall to
move. In fact, if the Marshall DOES move back, the bad guy might interpret the move to be an escape attempt and shoot him just for spite.
