I am not so certain that he should move every time an ET moves towards him while pointing a weapon at him. Consider a typical scene in an old U.S. Western movie...

The Marshal catches up with the bad guy. A single shot rings out from his trusty six-shooter and the bad guy knows he is out gunned. He decides to make a peaceful gesture by presenting his gun. He places it on the ground and backs away a little bit. He sees the Marshal is aware of the gun but is not approaching, so he backs aways some more. Now the Marshal sends a deputy or two to pickup the gun while he approaches the bad guy, all the while pointing his gun at the bad guy.

Should the bad guy continue to back away? No. His offering, the gun, has been accepted. He is now permitted to stand his ground and await the approach of the Marshal. If the Marshal does not want to be too close to the bad guy he will communicate an order for the bad guy to move.

I think we should apply that same scenario to Zachary and the ETs. Zachary should not move away unless instructed by the ETs. He has earned the right to stand his ground by virtue of their accepting his peace offering.
