The term is "back door". This is software techno-jargon. It refers to a means that some programmers put into their software that will allow them to access/modify the software/system without going through proper channels (the front door). This used to be a common practice among software developers, in that it made it easier to do maintenance work on the systems. With the increase in the numbers of cyber-crooks out there, the use of backdoors is quickly going the way of the dinosaur.

Now, how does this come into play with the probes. P&H seemed to think that they could enter the probes programming through a backdoor put there by the original Brace programmers. After entering the system this way, they had hoped to re-establish the command codes, and with them their control over the probes. This proved to be a fruitless endeavor, since the Andrew found a way to "de-activate" the command code recognition.

Hope this helps.
