I agree that Zachary should approach the ETs at the communications platform. It has to be clear to them that the platform is not one of theirs. Therefor, it is reasonable that the owners should investigate if they (the ETs) surround it. That encourages me to believe Zachary can approach if he is circumspect about it and does not go rushing in.

I think a gradual approach is called for. I would keep the angles to a minimum so that he is presenting the smallest target at all times (in case they should decide to use the light beam weapon) but he should make steady progress to the platform; pausing only when the ETs outwardly take notice of him.

The fact that he has one of the transmitters with him is quite fortuitous. He can present it to the ETs for their inspection and, by doing so, invite them to open communications. This may be the break we have been looking for.

The motive power of the problets (to coin a new term) sounds to me like the cilia of a paramecium. Such a system would give the impression of floating on the surface and would also provide an excellent means of overcoming virtually any terrain.
