Keep in mind, that so far as we can tell, Daniel has been receiving at least some of the transmissions from the other probes and, possibly, from Earth. We have no way of knowing how much of that he has heard, and of that what he has understood. It is as likely that he does understand the concept of auditory speech as that he does not.<p>A skinner box? I hope not. It would explain his compulsive behavior, however.
