I think we would have heard it from the other probes if that had happened. I figure either A) they are now eavesdropping on our conversations with the probes - or at least the probes responses to us, or B) when Zachary went into the cave/tunnel/airlock, his transponder was blocked. To P&H, this would have appeared to be a serious loss of signal.
