B! Steel wool! That's it! An air filter! This is a ventilation shaft. The fuzzy metal is a filter - much the same as I change far too infrequently in my A.C. units. Remember the descriptions of the sand/dust storms?
Now, what was that first piece of metal/not metal? - pollution control device? - sensor?
And what's with the "hatch"?

(WSU, of course, but I think it fits.)
