How about this for the WSU:
When touched, the fan starts spinning, causing the data coming
in too fast (cannot see the individual blades).
After releasing, the fan stops spinning (reboot) and everything is
the same as before.
I'm not sure if it happened because of touching the fan or the
monolith.
Enogh got damaged because he was too close to the fan when
Bette touched the monolith?
The fan is metal but when it is spinning it becomes metal/not metal.
This sounds alright even after rereading it, hmmm.

PS: I noticed the corkscrew(sp?) look of the tunnel too.
It could still be a device to make tunnels instead of a fan.
