I care very much about Heinlein's books. It is disappointing past bearing when an expensive film like Starship Troopers doesn't get it right. I have very little time to squander on films that are not going to delight me. It is necessary to be very selective.

I have seen a LOT of bad, pointless movies with WONDERFUL special effects as homework for computer graphics classes.

The only thing that bothers me is that you took my indignation so personally. No one could possibly doubt your sterling qualities of character, honor, and patriotism. It is commendable that you chose the US Navy (Heinlein also explains in other places why it is the superior choice of all the branches). A combat veteran deserves all the respect we can muster.

In regard to the History and Moral Philosphy Class, you will recall that every student had to attend, and it could be taught only by a combat veteran. I thought you missed the part in the book where it was carefully explained that the only way to earn the privilege of voting and participating in government was to be a veteran. It was further explained that some duty would be found for any person regardless of their capabilities , even a blind person "counting the fuzz on caterpillars by touch." The crucial factor was the willingness to serve. The payoff was the voting franchise.

These folks were the elite in the society, in contrast to the don't know/don't care masses. Also, please recall that parents were publicly flogged for the misbehavior of their children, for not instilling ethical values. Heinlein packs a lot more in this novel than just the Bug War. Responsibility is the theme of the book.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate adult conversation.
