Speaking for myself, but I am sure there are others that feel the same as I do, I enjoy a mix of the three elements.

There are times when I am really into the story and deep thinking and strategizing and all that stuff where the proactive approach is best.

But there are also times when situations arise that are best handled on a reactive level. Case in point: Zachary making first contact. If we knew what kind of reaction the aliens would have to things that Zachary does, we could be proactive and determine the best strategy to take. But if we had that knowledge it would not be as suspenseful or fun to read. Reactive is best in this case.

But, being a working stiff, with a family, there are often times that I don't have the time or the energy to devote to the story. At times like these, I like to be spoon-fed the story. Sometimes it seems that when a majority of the MARSupials are too busy to actively participate, the story drags and nothing much happens. At times like this, it would be nice if the staff stepped up and filled in the gaps. Then when audience participation returned, the staff could cut back on their control of the storyline.

Just some thoughts on the subject.
