I heard this puzzle at *least* third hand, so it's quite possible that it has mutated from it's original form and certain constraints have been left out. Also since it was posed as a Microsoft interview question (I know lots of people who have a low opinion of Microsoft/Bill Gates and their business practices), perhaps the absurdity of trying to do this in real life was meant to be emphasized.
