Well, considering what a chore writing a thesis is, I wouldn't quite say that it's in the bag, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it's not an oncoming train, to employ a couple more cliches. Yes, it looks like I will remain on the east coast for the next few years. New Mexico is beautiful, but it is not a viable solution to the two-body problem.
Turning physics equations into music...hmmm...an intriguing idea. I'm surprised that it hasn't been done before since there are so many scientists with musical talent. As for generating new equations that way, the Baroque composers may have generated many beautiful variations on their themes, but without changing the rules (a paradigm shift) they would have never arrived at Mozart.
